Jason Wingreen (born October 9, 1920 in Brooklyn , New York - † December 25, 2015 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor . He was best known for his appearances in many popular American television series.

biography

Wingreen was born in 1920 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City , the son of a Jewish tailor . He grew up in Howard Beach , Queens and attended John Adams High School. He later studied English and Language at Brooklyn College , where he graduated in June 1949.

During the Second World War he was part of the United States Army Air Forces and stationed in Germany and England , among other places . After serving, he returned to Howard Beach and studied drama at the New School with the assistance of the GI Bill Veterans Program . He was a co-founder of the Circle in the Square Theater in Greenwich Village .

In 1955 he made his first appearance in the television series, his first film role followed shortly thereafter. From the early 1960s he was part of the voting jury of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences . Jason Wingreen achieved great fame for his impersonation of the bartender Harry Snowden in the American sitcom All in the Family and its spin-off Archie Bunker's Place . With guest appearances in Kobra, you take over , Bonanza or Raumschiff Enterprise , he also became a familiar face to the German audience.

Shortly before shooting Star Wars : The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Wingreen suggested the role of Yoda . However, this went to the puppeteer Frank Oz , who also moved the figure. Instead, he dubbed the bounty hunter Boba Fett , played by the Englishman Jeremy Bulloch . However, in the 2004 re-release, his voice was replaced by that of Temuera Morrison . In fact, it wasn't until 2000 that it became known that he had spoken the bounty hunter, because his comparatively small role meant that he was neither named in the credits nor received any royalties.

Windgreen passed away on December 25, 2015 in Los Angeles, California, as his son Ned confirmed. Next to him he left two grandchildren and his sister Harriet, who played as a pianist for the New York Philharmonic for years . He was 95 years old.
