Stephen Patrick Gethins (born March 28, 1976 ) is a British politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

While studying law at Dundee University , Gethins focused on public international law. He also studied at the University of Antwerp and obtained a master's degree from the University of Kent . Gethins worked for various non-governmental organizations and was particularly involved in demilitarization and democratization in the conflicts in the Caucasus and the Balkans.

Political career

Gethins acted as advisor to the First Minister on European and international issues, as well as rural affairs, energy and climate change. He was also a political advisor in the Committee of the Regions .

In the British general election in 2015 , Gethins ran for the SNP for the mandate of the constituency of North East Fife . He inherited his party colleague Roderick Campbell , who could not win a seat in the two previous elections. The incumbent Liberal Democrat Menzies Campbell , who has represented the constituency in the British House of Commons since 1987 , did not run for these elections. With the massive increase in votes by the SNP in these elections, Gethins won the majority with 40.9% and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . In parliament, Gethins is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and, since January 2016, also a related subcommittee. With a lead of just two votes over the liberal-democratic challenger, Gethins maintained his mandate in the 2017 early general election .
