U 1002 was a Germanclass VII C / 41 submarine that was used in World War II .

The boat

The construction contract was awarded to Blohm + Voss in Hamburg on October 14, 1941 . The keel was laid under the designation "Neubau 202" on January 4, 1943, the launch took place on October 6, 1943, and on November 30, 1943 the commissioning took place under Oberleutnant zur See Albrecht Schubart. Oberleutnant Schubart commanded the boat until July 6, 1944, before he was replaced by Oberleutnant Hans-Heinz Boos.

Mission history

The boat left Kiel on February 9, 1945 and moved together with the U 260 , U 681 and U 1169 to the Horten underground base in Norway , where all the boats arrived on February 13, 1945 and then various tests in the Oslo Fjord performed with the snorkel mast .

On February 20, U 1002 moved to Kristiansand , where some additions were made again before the boat left for its first patrol. On the 48 day long voyage, U 1002 operated in the North Atlantic and at the western exit of the English Channel , but no enemy units could be sunk or damaged.

Whereabouts

Like the other German submarines that were lying in Norwegian ports at the end of the war, U 1002 was also handed over to the Allies on May 9th. These transferred it on May 30th via Scapa Flow and the port of Londonderry in Lisahally in Northern Ireland to Loch Ryan in Scotland . The boat was towed by the British naval tug Prosperous on December 13 and brought to the sinking area, where it was finally sunk by a torpedo from the British submarine Tantivy .
