U 996 was a German submarine of the type VII C / 41 , a so-called "Atlantic boat ", which was to be used by the navy in World War II .
Technical specifications
A Type VII C-boat, driven by two diesel engines, reached a speed of 17 knots when traveling above water , had a maximum range of 6500 nm and could make 7.8 knots under water with the help of the two electric motors, with a maximum range of 80 nm .
Commitment and history
On July 22, 1943, U 996 was badly damaged in an air raid on Hamburg while it was being fitted out in the Blohm & Voss shipyard. The submarine was then handed over to the Schichau shipyard ( Königsberg ) on November 21, 1943 . However, the delivery was never carried out. The construction of U 996 was canceled on July 22, 1944 and the submarine was then scrapped.
