U 870 was a German submarine from the IX C / 40 that was used by the German navy during the submarine war in World War II in the North Atlantic .

construction

The U 870 was commissioned on August 25, 1941 as one of 11 Class IX C boats from the Deschimag shipyard in Bremen . The boat belonged to the twelfth series, which included the boats U 865 to U 870 . It was 76 m long and had a diameter of 6.84 m. A boat of this type could reach a speed of 18.3 knots when driving above water and drove a maximum of 7.5 knots under water. The keel of U 870 was on April 29, 1943, and it was launched on October 29 of the same year. The boat was put into service on February 3, 1944 by Corvette Captain Ernst Hechler.
