U 876 was the last German long-range submarine of the type IX D2 still in service; it was supposed to be used in the Second World War by the navy as part of the operations of the Monsun group in the Far East , but was no longer used.
The boat
U 876 was commissioned on August 25, 1941 as the 28th and thus the last unit of class IX D2 from the Bremen Deschimag shipyard. The keel was laid on June 5, 1943, the launch took place on February 29, 1944. The commissioning took place on April 21, 1944 under the command of Kapitänleutnant Rolf Bahn. After the commissioning of the 4th submarine flotilla in Stettin, the boat was assigned to the training of the crew and instruction in handling the boat. In contrast to other German submarines of its time, it had no coat of arms and no maling on the tower , probably because it was no longer used in the war.
Sinking
On December 31, 1944 and again in January 1945, the boat was damaged by a mine hit in the Baltic Sea and had to go to the shipyard in Kiel . There, U 876 was equipped for a nine-month long-distance operation to East Asia in April , but this operation never happened.
On May 4, 1945, U 876 was in Eckernförde Bay when it was attacked by several British Hawker Typhoon fighter-bombers of the 2nd Tactical Air Force Squadrons 175, 184 and 245 with machine gun fire and several missiles. The damage caused by U 876 were so severe that web commander in response to the rainbow command of the self-absorption ordered the boat.
The wreck was lifted and scrapped in 1947.
