U 883 was a submarine of the former German Kriegsmarine of the type U-Boot-Klasse IX D / 42 , which was used in World War II .

history

The basic development was made in 1942, but the U 883 was the only IXD / 42 submarine in service . On September 30, 1943, the Navy first informed the shipyard of the suspension . After another check of the feasibility of the project - especially with regard to the supplies - construction was resumed towards the end of the year. The sister boat U 884 was severely damaged by air raids on the factory premises under construction. Generally identical to type IXD2 . Commissioned at the end of March 1945, after which it was handed over to the Allied forces in Wilhelmshaven on May 8, 1945 .

It was sunk on December 31, 1945 as part of the post-war Operation Deadlight . (Location of the wreck: 55 ° 44 ′ 0 ″  N , 8 ° 40 ′ 0 ″  W Coordinates: 55 ° 44 ′ 0 ″  N , 8 ° 40 ′ 0 ″  W )
