U 971 was a German submarine from the Type VII C that of the former German Navy during the Second World War in the Bay of Biscay was used and in the English Channel.

It was manufactured at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg . The keel was laid on June 15, 1942, the launch on February 22, 1943. After commissioning on April 1, 1943 under Lieutenant zur See Walter Zeplien, U 971 of the 5th U-Flotilla was assigned to training. On June 1, 1944, the front line began with the 3rd U-Flotilla . U 971 was attacked and sunk with depth charges on June 24, 1944 after 17 days at sea by the destroyers HMS Eskimo and HMCS Haida in cooperation with a Liberator bomber of the Czech Air Force . The boat sank in the English Channel north of Brest in position 49 ° 1 '  N , 5 ° 35'  W . There was one dead and 51 survivors.
