People's Navy
The first lieutenant at sea was a rank in the rank group of the lieutenant in the People's Navy of the German Democratic Republic . He corresponded to the first lieutenant of the other branches of the National People's Army . The rank was comparable to the NATO rank code OF-1. The rank designation Oberleutnant zur See was later changed to Oberleutnant and thus resembled the designation in the other branches of the armed forces. The rank designation Oberleutnant zur See continued to be used informally in the naval forces.
The rank badge consisted of shoulder pieces with a navy blue background and parallel silver cords. On the shoulder piece were three square gold-colored shoulder stars in a triangular shape. The sleeve badge consisted of two yellow single stripes. The career badge was sewn over it. In contrast to all other German naval forces, the sleeve badges only covered about 40% of the sleeve circumference.

Empire and Navy
In the navy of the German Empire and the German Navy , the Oberleutnant zur See (until December 31, 1898 Lieutenant zur See ) also designated the highest rank in the rank group of the lieutenant , comparable to the NATO rank code OF-1. Here too he corresponded to the first lieutenant in the army and air force.
Engineer officers wore a cogwheel instead of the starfish on their sleeves and shoulder pieces, medical officers the Aesculapian staff, naval weapons service 2 crossed tubes, barrage weapons service a raise (symbolized mine), intelligence service a lightning bolt, administrative officers the Mercury staff.
In the German Empire, the OLzS only wore one (medium) wide stripe. Naval officers have a crown in place of the starfish.
