Sleeve stripes were commemorative badges or badges of membership that were given to certain units of the Wehrmacht , the SA and the SS as traditional carriers . The award was worn on the right lower sleeve. Arm bands of the Wehrmacht are personal awards for work or bravery , which must not be confused with the sleeve stripes. In contrast to the Wehrmacht, the traditional and association badge is called a cuff in the Bundeswehr . These are worn on both lower sleeves.
Wehrmacht
The sleeve stripes go back to similar bands of the Reichsheeres , with which certain units wore such sleeve stripes. Sleeve stripes were used to identify the affiliation to certain units and as such had to be removed when leaving a unit. The stripes were worn on the tunic (army), cloth skirt (air force), skirt (navy) and on the field blouse on the right sleeve.
