U 972 was a German type VII C submarine of the German Navy .

history

The construction contract for U 972 was placed on June 5, 1941. It was built by the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg . It was given hull number 172. The keel was laid on June 15, 1942. The launch took place on February 22, 1943. On April 8, 1943 the boat was put into service under its commander Klaus-Dietrich König. It received the field post number M-42 135. From November 8, 1943 to November 30, 1943 it was a training boat and belonged to the 5th U-Flotilla in Kiel . From December 1, 1943 to January 7, 1944 it was a front boat and belonged to the 6th U-Flotilla in St. Nazaire , France. It operated west of Ireland and did not sink any ships during that time.

Whereabouts

The boat last reported off Newfoundland at position 60 ° 30'N / 20 ° 00'W. It was last seen on January 7, 1944 by U 981 at 3:15 a.m. in grid square AL 1499. The boat has been officially lost since February 1, 1944. 49 men were lost with the submarine.
