6th submarine flotilla
The 6th Submarine Flotilla , or 6th U-Flotilla for short , was a military association of the German Navy during World War II .
history
The flotilla , also known as the "Hundius" submarine flotilla , was formed on October 1, 1938 in Kiel under the command of Corvette Captain Werner Hartmann and was named after Lieutenant Captain Paul Hundius , a submarine commander of the First World War , who served on September 16, 1918 when his submarine SM UB 103 sank. The flotilla was dissolved in December 1939 and integrated into the newly established 2nd U-Flotilla .
The flotilla was re-established as the 6th submarine flotilla in September 1941 under the command of Korvettenkapitän Wilhelm Schulz with a base in Danzig . Used as a training flotilla during the first few months, after being transferred to St. Nazaire in February 1942, she was actively used in naval warfare . In August 1944 the final dissolution took place, the last boats left the base for Norway .
