Carl Emmermann
Carl Emmermann (* 6. March 1915 in Hamburg , † 25. March 1990 in Celle ) was a German U-boat - commander during World War II . As the commander of U 172, he sank a total of 27 ships with a total tonnage of 152,080 GRT .
Life
Emmermann began his service in the Navy in 1934. For several years he was a training officer in the Mürwik Naval School , where future officers received their training. In 1939 Emmermann became a member of the submarine weapon and in November 1940 first officer on watch on the submarine UA under the command of Hans Eckermann.
In November 1941 Emmermann got command of his own submarine, U 172. He undertook five patrols in the Caribbean Sea , with the polar bear wolf pack in South African waters, as well as in the North Atlantic and South Atlantic .
His largest sunk ship was the British troop ship Orcades with 23,456 GRT. During the fifth voyage, his submarine took half of the crew of U 604 , which had been badly damaged by two air strikes and had to be abandoned. After this voyage, Emmermann became the commander of the 6th submarine flotilla "Hundius" in November 1943.
In August 1944 Emmermann became head of the Type XXIII test group . At the end of 1944, he wrote the deployment instructions for this new type of submarine.
In March 1945 he was in command of the U 3037 for a month and in the last month of the war the 31st U-Flotilla in Hamburg was subordinate to him. With other naval officers, he reported to the infantry operation around Hamburg as commander of the Emmermann naval battalion .
Emmermann survived the war and returned to Germany from captivity . He then studied engineering and became a businessman .
