U 42 was a German submarine of type IX A , which in the Second World War by the Navy was used.

The boat was on 21 December 1937 at the AG Weser in Bremen laid down on and on July 15, 1939 Lieutenant asked Rolf Dau into service. Until its sinking on October 13, 1939, it was part of the “Hundius” U-Flotilla in Kiel as a training and front boat .

U 42 undertook a patrol into the North Atlantic , on which it damaged a ship with 4,083 GRT and from which it did not return.

The boat left Wilhelmshaven on October 2, 1939. On October 13, 1939, it damaged the British steamer Stonepool (4,803 GRT) southwest of Ireland by artillery fire . He belonged to convoy OB-17. The ship was sunk by U 207 on September 11, 1942 .

Whereabouts

Shortly after the attack on the Stonepool , the boat was forced to dive by the British convoy security with the destroyers HMS Imogen , HMS Ilex , HMS Inglefield and HMS Ivanhoe . The Ilex was damaged by depth charges , U 42 had to surface and was rammed by the Ilex . At the same time it was bombarded with artillery by the British destroyers until it was sunk. Of the 46 men in the crew , 20 were rescued; 26 were killed in the fire. The position was 49 ° 12 ′  N , 16 ° 0 ′  W in marine grid reference BE 2699.
