The order for the boat was awarded to the shipyard Deutsche Werke , Kiel , on September 25, 1939 . The keel was laid on December 12, 1939, the launch on July 27, 1940. The commissioning under First Lieutenant Nikolai Asmus Clausen finally took place on September 4, 1940.

After its commissioning on September 4, 1940 until October 16, 1940, the boat belonged to the 1st U-Flotilla in Kiel as a training boat . After that, from October 17, 1940 to December 18, 1940, school boat in the 24th U-Flotilla in Memel and from December 19, 1940 to June 21, 1941, school boat in the 22nd U-Flotilla in Gotenhafen .
