U 88 was a German submarine of type VIIC that in World War II by the German navy was used.

history

The order for the boat was awarded to Flender-Werke in Lübeck on January 25, 1939 . The keel was laid on July 1, 1940, the launch on August 16, 1941, the commissioning under Lieutenant Heino Bohmann finally took place on October 15, 1941.

After its commissioning on October 15, 1941 until April 30, 1942, the boat was part of the 8th U-Flotilla in Königsberg and Danzig as a training boat . After training, U 88 belonged as a front boat to the 7th U-Flotilla in St. Nazaire from May 1, 1942 to June 30, 1942 and from July 1, 1942 to its sinking on September 12, 1942 as a front boat to the 11th U Flotilla in mountains .

Commander Bohmann ran out with U 88 on three operations, on which he sank two ships with a total tonnage of 12,304 GRT .

Use statistics

First venture

The boat was launched on 18 April 1942 at 7.00 am from Kiel and ran on May 3, 1942 at 5:30 in Kirkenes one. U 88 entered Kristiansand on April 19, 1942 to supplement it and left again on April 20, 1942. The boat entered Kirkenes on April 24, 1942 to supplement it again and left again on April 29, 1942. U 88 relocated on May 4, 1942 via Skjomenfjord (May 6, 1942), Harstad (May 6, 1942), Narvik (June 10, 1942) to Harstad (June 10, 1942) and back to the Skjomenfjord (June 13 1942).

Second venture

The boat left Skomenfjord on June 17, 1942 at 9 a.m. and entered Narvik on July 11, 1942. It entered Narvik again on June 17th at 10.15am and left Narvik at 12.00pm on the same day. As a supplement, the boat entered Harstad on July 11, 1942 and left again on the same day. On this 25-day and 6,079.4 nm above and 97.7 nm underwater expedition in the North Sea and Jan Mayen , two ships with 13,653 GRT were sunk. U 88 belonged to the group with the code name "Eisteufel".

  • July 5, 1942: sinking of the American steamer Daniel Morgan ( Lage ) with 7,177 GRT. The steamer was sunk by two torpedoes. He had 8,439 tons of steel , food, explosives and tanks loaded and was on his way from Baltimore to Arkhangelsk. The ship belonged to convoy PQ-17. There were three dead and 51 survivors.

Third company

The boat left Narvik on August 25, 1942 and was sunk on September 12, 1942. No enemy ships were sunk or damaged on this 18-day undertaking in the North Sea against convoy PQ 18 .

Whereabouts

On September 12, 1942, U 88 was sunk in the Arctic Ocean south of Spitsbergen by the British destroyer HMS Faulknor at position 75 ° 4 '  N , 4 ° 49'  E in naval grid square AB 2739. All 46 crew members were killed.

U 88 did not lose any crew members during its service life before the sinking.
