U 216 was a German type VII D submarinethat was used in World War II .
history
The construction contract for the Germania shipyard in Kiel is dated February 16, 1940. The keel was laid on January 11, 1941, the launch on October 23, 1941 and commissioning on December 15, 1941.
commander
Oberleutnant zur See Karl-Otto Schultz was born on November 9, 1915 in Wesermünde-Lehe. In 1934 he joined the Reichsmarine as an officer candidate. At first he was the first officer on watch (1. WO) on board U 22 , a so-called "dugout" type II submarine and later became the commander of U 34 , a type VII A submarine. When U 216 was still in the construction phase, he was appointed commander of the boat. He and the entire crew of U 216 were killed in an attack on the boat.
Tower painting
KptLt Schultz chose a coat of arms for his boat: the first showed a sword stabbing in Great Britain. Although U 216 belonged to the 9th U-Flotilla , it did not have the "laughing swordfish" on the tower because the boat did not enter Brest after the end of the operation. It was previously sunk.
Whereabouts
U 216 was sunk on October 20, 1942 in the North Atlantic, southwest of Ireland by a Liberator with the marking "H" of the British RAF Squadron 224 with six depth charges. The aircraft was badly damaged in this attack by the explosions of its own depth charges and had to make an emergency landing on its base in the Isles of Scilly .
