The order for the boat was awarded to the shipyard Deutsche Werke , Kiel , on September 25, 1939 . The keel was laid on April 10, 1940, the launch on November 16, 1940. The commissioning under Oberleutnant zur See Hans-Jürgen Radke finally took place on December 28, 1940. After its commissioning on December 28, 1940 to September 30, 1941, the boat was part of the 24th U-Flotilla in Memel as a training boat . From October 1, 1940 to March 1945 a school boat in the 21st U-Flotilla in Pillau , from March 1945 to May 1945 it was used as a training boat for the 31st U-Flotilla in Hamburg . The boat had a tiger emblem on the tower .

U 148 was used exclusively as a school and training boat and did not complete any operations in the front during its service.

Whereabouts

The boat was self- sunk by its crew on May 5, 1945 in Wilhelmshaven in the west chamber of the IV entrance (Raederschleuse) according to the rainbow order that had existed for a long time, but was canceled by Grand Admiral Dönitz on the evening of May 4, 1945 .
