Tower (ship part)
The tower is part of a submarine , which is also called sails (as a translation of the English term sail ).
In historical boats the control room was often located in the tower, which is why this Conning Tower or Conn for short (from English to con : navigate, other interpretation: from to control ) became known. Today the command center inside the hull is called Conn.
On the tower of some submarines, for example early flights ( i.e. the first series) of the Los Angeles class , the depth rudders are attached. On more modern boats, these are attached to the hull and retractable to facilitate surfacing through surface ice. World war boats were often equipped with a so-called winter garden .
The tower also houses all the antennas (usually an antenna for telecommunications and electronic reconnaissance , a radar , and a radio antenna) as well as the periscope . These are extended from the top of the tower.
There is also a small (command) bridge on the tower , which is used, for example, to navigate when entering and leaving narrow harbors and when crossing canals.
