The USS Tucson (SSN-770) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles-class submarine to.
history
The Tucson was commissioned by Newport News Shipbuilding in 1988 and laid down in 1991 at the shipyard of the shipbuilding company, which is part of Northrop Grumman . After a construction period of two and a half years, the ship was launched in March 1994. The boat was christened by Mrs. Diane C. Kent after the city of Tucson , Arizona .
The official entry into service with the US Navy was scheduled for August 18, 1995. However, since Hurricane Felix threatened the coast of Virginia at that time , the Navy decided to move its fleet from the port to the open sea. The hurricane turned off the coast later. The commissioning ceremony was rescheduled for September 9th, but the Navy's register of ships still specifies August 18th as the date.
After a year of service in the Atlantic, the Tucson moved through the Panama Canal into the Pacific to Pearl Harbor . On the way there, the submarine stopped in San Diego , where VIPs and tourists from the twin city Tucson were allowed to view the boat. The Tucson made its first frontline deployment in 1998 when it was deployed in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Southern Watch . In the summer of 1999 she took part in the Teamwork South '99 exercise off the coast of Chile , and then in 2006 in Valiant Shield . After this exercise, the Tucson was docked and overtaken in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard , and in late 2008 she returned to Pearl. In July 2010, the submarine took part in the Invincible Spirit exercise alongside the USS George Washington (CVN-73) along with South Korean forces .
In fiction
The Tucson plays a role in Tom Clancy's novel In the Sign of the Dragon : She is entrusted with the task of destroying China's only ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear and fulfills this task.
