The USS San Juan (SSN-751) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles-class submarine to.

history

The contract to build the San Juan was awarded to Electric Boat in 1982 . This company laid the keel of the boat in 1985, it was launched in 1986. The submarine was put into service in 1988 with the US Navy. The boat is named after the capital of Puerto Rico, San Juan .

The boat was the first boat of the improved lot 688 (I) . Among other things, the San Juan has an improved sonar system, and the depth rudders have been relocated from the tower to the hull in order to make it easier to break through the ice cover when surfacing during operations under the Arctic ice sheet.

On March 19, 1998, the San Juan collided with an Ohio-class boat , the USS Kentucky (SSBN-737) . At the time of the accident, the San Juan was submerged and the Kentucky was on the surface of the water. The front ballast tank of the San Juan was torn open, while the Kentucky was not damaged. Nobody was injured either. Both boats drove under their own power to their bases, where they were examined.

In 2009 the San Juan moved to the Mediterranean and from there to the Indian Ocean. She docked in the Seychelles and South Africa , among others .
