The USS Montpelier (SSN-765) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles-class submarine to. It was named after the town of Montpelier in Vermont .

history

SSN-765 was commissioned in 1987 and laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding in May 1989 . On August 23, 1991 the hull of the Montpelier was launched and the ship was christened. The boat's godmother was Mrs. Nancy Hayes Sununu, wife of John H. Sununu , then Chief of Staff of the White House . After the final equipment and some test drives, the submarine was officially put into service in 1993. In 1995 the submarine took part in the Bosnian War, for which the crew received the Armed Forces Service Medal as well as the NATO Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation .

In 2003 the Montpelier was involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom , during the opening phase of the invasion of the US armed forces, the submarine shot down its twelve BGM-109 Tomahawks at land targets in Iraq from the Vertical Launching System . The then commandant of the Montpelier , Cmdr. William J. Frake, received the Bronze Star , the crew the Navy Unit Commendation . The boat was then overhauled in 2004 in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard .

In November 2007, the Montpelier began a transfer to escort the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) . This led them to the area of ​​responsibility of the United States Central Command , the purpose of the trip was so-called maritime security operations , i.e. the protection of civil shipping against piracy.

On October 13, 2012, there was a collision between the submarine and the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS San Jacinto . According to the US Navy, nobody was injured and both ships were able to continue on their own. Reuters news agency reported, citing an anonymous source, that the cruiser's sonar dome was damaged.
