John H. Sununu

John Henry Sununu (born July 2, 1939 in Havana ) is an American politician and member of the Republican Party . Sununu was Governor of New Hampshire from 1983 to 1989 . From 1989 to 1991 he was Chief of Staff of the White House .

Early years

Among other things, John Sununu studied mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1966 he graduated in this area. He then taught this subject himself at Tufts University in Medford until 1968 . By 1973 he made it to the position of deputy dean at this university. From 1973 until his election as governor of his state, he was President of JHS Engineering Company and Thermal Research, Inc.

Political rise and governor of New Hampshire

Sununu became a member of the Republican Party . From 1973 to 1974 was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives . In 1982 he was elected as the new governor of his state as his party's candidate against the democratic incumbent Hugh Gallen . John Sununu took up his new office on January 6, 1983. After he had been confirmed in his office in 1984 and 1986, he could remain in this office until January 4, 1989. During this time he gained both regional and national recognition. He became a member of numerous governors' associations. Among other things, he was chairman of the National Governors Association and the Association of Republican Governors.

Sununu was and is rather conservative. He advocated the expansion of nuclear energy and opposed new taxes for New Hampshire. He still takes these positions today. In 1988 he caused a sensation when he not the only governor of all US states against a resolution of the UN expressed that the Zionism , known as racism. The governor later revised his position on the issue in favor of Israel .

After the end of his governorship, John Sununu was appointed Chief of Staff by President George Bush . He held this office from 1989 to 1991. When rumors surfaced that he had misused government funds for private travel, he resigned from this post in 1991; he was succeeded by Samuel Skinner . He later repaid a small portion of the private costs he was accused of to the state.

In the book Losing Earth : The Decade We Almost Stopped Climate Change by journalist Nathaniel Rich , it is reported that Sununu, in his role as Chief of Staff, prevented the signing of an agreement by 67 states in November 1989 aimed at reducing CO2 emissions by 2005 to reduce by 20 percent. It also describes how he played a leading role in creating public uncertainty about global warming , transforming it from an urgent, non-partisan, and undisputed fact into a political issue.

Today he continues to do business as President of JHS Associates Ltd and a partner in a private finance firm. He is also the curator of the George HW Bush Presidential Library Foundation . John Sununu is married to Nancy Hayes, with whom he has eight children. Among them is John E. Sununu , born in 1964 , who represented the state of New Hampshire in the US Senate between January 7, 2003 and January 3, 2009 , and Chris Sununu , born in 1974 , who held the gubernatorial elections in November 8, 2016 New Hampshire won.
