Jeanne Shaheen (* 28 January 1947 in Saint Charles , Missouri as Cynthia Jeanne Bowers ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1997 to 2003 she was governor of the state of New Hampshire , which she has represented in the US Senate since January 2009 .

Life

After finishing school, she attended Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania , where she received a bachelor's degree in English; then she moved to the University of Mississippi , where she received her Masters . Shaheen taught at a high school in Mississippi after graduating and then moved to New Hampshire in 1973, where she worked as a teacher.

Shaheen began to get involved in politics. She was elected to the New Hampshire Senate in 1990 . She was elected governor of New Hampshire in 1996, 1998 and 2000. Shaheen is the first US woman politician to be elected both state governor and senator. She was also the first woman to be elected governor of New Hampshire.

In 2002, she waived another candidacy for governorship and instead applied for a seat in the US Senate. However, it was defeated by the Republican John E. Sununu . In the run-up to the 2004 presidential election , she supported John Kerry . Shaheen became director of the Harvard Institute of Politics in April 2005, succeeding former director Dan Glickman . On November 4, 2008, she competed for the second time against John E. Sununu in the fight for a Senate seat and this time prevailed with a share of the vote of 52 percent; Sununu got 45 percent. Robby Mook managed her successful election campaign . Even in the Senate elections in 2014 , she was able to prevail again in generally poor conditions for her party. Her opponent was former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown . After Shaheen had led by a clear margin in polls until autumn 2014, it was finally a close race: She won 51.6 percent of the vote in the election on November 4, 2014, and 48.4 percent voted for Republican Brown. On January 3, 2015, she began another six-year term as Senator for New Hampshire .

Jeanne Shaheen is married to lawyer Bill Shaheen and they have two children together.
