John Bell

John Bell (born July 20, 1765 in Londonderry , Rockingham County , New Hampshire Colony , †  March 23, 1836 in Chester , New Hampshire ) was an American politician and governor of the state of New Hampshire from 1828 to 1829 .

Early years and political advancement

John Bell attended local schools in his home country. Between 1799 and 1800 he was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives and from 1803 to 1804 he was a member of the New Hampshire Senate . He was then from 1817 to 1823 advisor to the government of his state before he was between 1823 and 1828 as sheriff chief of police in Rockingham County. During these years, the party landscape in the United States was in a state of upheaval. The previously sole dominant Democratic Republican Party split into two factions, with Andrew Jackson's supporters soon forming the Democratic Party . The other faction, to which John Bell also belonged, called itself the National Republican Party . This group was based on John Quincy Adams and became the forerunner of the Whig Party . In 1828, Bell was elected as the new governor of his state as a National Republican candidate against incumbent Benjamin Pierce .

New Hampshire Governor

John Bell took up his new office on June 5, 1828. During his year-long tenure, the Exeter Savings Bank was established and new experimental farming methods introduced. In addition, new schools sprang up across the state and manufacturing output within New Hampshire, with some help from the state, increased. In 1829 Bell was defeated by Pierce, who took over the office of governor again. John Bell resigned on June 4, 1829 from his office.

Another résumé

After his election defeat, Bell withdrew from politics and devoted himself to his private interests, which mainly included agriculture. John Bell died in March 1836. He had ten children with his wife Persis Thom. The son Charles (1823-1893) was in 1879 for a short time US Senator and from 1881 to 1883 also Governor of New Hampshire. John Bell's brother Samuel (1770-1850) was governor of this state from 1819 to 1823 and then from 1823 to 1835 US senator.
