Political rise
Straw was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1859 and 1864 he was an MP in the New Hampshire House of Representatives . New Hampshire Governor
In 1872, Straw was elected as the new governor of New Hampshire as his party's candidate against incumbent James A. Weston , who was to succeed him again in 1874. After he had won another election against Weston in 1876, he was able to stay between June 2, 1872 and June 3, 1874 in this office. During this time, the governor worked to further reduce the national debt, which was a result of the costs of the civil war . He called for better craft training in schools in order to better prepare future industrial workers for their jobs. In the then acute question of prohibition , he proposed a local solution: subordinate authorities such as counties or cities should decide in their area how they wanted to deal with this question.
