John Butler Smith

John Butler Smith (born April 12, 1838 in Saxtons River , Windham County , Vermont , † August 10, 1914 in Hillsborough , New Hampshire ) was an American politician and governor of the state of New Hampshire from 1893 to 1895 .

Early years and political advancement

John Smith attended Francestown Academy and Hillsborough public schools. He then began a successful business career. He was the owner of Contoocook Mills Company and worked in real estate and banking. Smith was a member of the Republican Party . In 1884 he was an elector in the presidential election and between 1887 and 1889 he was a member of the governor's advisory board. In 1890 he became chairman of his party in New Hampshire.

New Hampshire Governor

In 1892, John Smith was elected governor of his state. He began his two-year term on January 3, 1893. During his reign he appointed some of his party friends to the state's working or forestry committee. After a fire in the Dover mental hospital that killed 42 people, these institutions were placed under direct control of the state government for better control. Until then, the counties had oversight of these institutions.

After the end of his governorship, Smith withdrew from politics. He devoted himself to his business interests until his death in 1914. He had three children with his wife, Emma Lavender.
