Noah Martin (born July 26, 1801 in Epsom , Merrimack County , New Hampshire , † May 28, 1863 in Dover , New Hampshire) was an American politician and governor of the state of New Hampshire from 1852 to 1854 .

Early years and political advancement

Noah Martin studied medicine at Dartmouth College until 1824 . After his successful exam he worked as a doctor in Dover after two intermediate stops. There he was instrumental in founding the Dover Medical Association. He was also a member of the New Hampshire Medical Association. Martin became a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 1830, 1832 and 1837 . Between 1835 and 1836 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1852 he was elected governor of his state.

New Hampshire Governor

Noah Martin took up his new office on June 3, 1852. After being re-elected, he could serve until June 8, 1854. During this time he promoted agriculture, among other things. He was of the opinion that agriculture should be taught in state schools. Martin also became a member of the New Hampshire Agricultural Association. In the state administration he advocated the relocation of parts of public services to private hands. He also advocated not granting more railway licenses than economically necessary. At the same time, he wanted to make the railway companies liable for accidental damage and consequences caused by mistakes made by staff. At the federal level, he supported President Franklin Pierce , who was also from New Hampshire. He campaigned for an escape regulation for slaves who had escaped from the southern states , which was then rejected by the Supreme Court under its presiding judge Roger B. Taney .

Another résumé

After the end of his tenure, Martin largely withdrew from politics. He resumed his work as a doctor in Dover. At the same time, however, he was also active in other areas, including the president of several banks. He was still a member of several medical associations. Noah Martin died in May 1863. He had two children with his wife, Mary Jane Woodbury.
