Samuel Dinsmoor junior (born May 8, 1799 in Keene , New Hampshire , † February 24, 1869 ibid) was an American politician and governor of the state of New Hampshire from 1849 to 1852 .

Early years

Samuel was the son of former Congressman Samuel Dinsmoor , who was also Governor of New Hampshire between 1831 and 1834. He attended Dartmouth College until 1814 . After completing a law degree, he was admitted to the bar in 1818. From 1819 to 1823 he was assistant to James Miller , the Territorial Governor of the Arkansas Territory . After Miller's resignation, Dinsmoor returned with him to New Hampshire and began working as a lawyer. From 1830 he was also employed by the Ashuelot Bank in Keene, of which his father was president. After the death of his father, he took over the bank. In addition to his other activities, he held the position of bank manager until his death.

Political rise and governor of New Hampshire

Between 1826 and 1830 he was clerk in the New Hampshire Senate . In 1825 he was one of two escorts when visiting the French General Lafayette . In 1849 he was elected governor of his state as a candidate for the Democratic Party . Samuel Dinsmoor took up his new office on June 7, 1849. After he was re-elected in 1850 and 1851, he could remain in office until June 3, 1852. During his tenure, the militia was restructured. Among other things, all white, male residents of the state were obliged to join the militia. However, they only had to actually become active in the event of war or in other exceptional situations. Dinsmoor also tried to curtail the power of firms and corporations through state controls. This also affected the state railway company.

Another résumé

After the end of his tenure, Dinsmoor withdrew from politics. But he remained active as a lawyer and head of his bank. He died on February 24, 1869. Governor Dinsmoor was married twice and had two children.
