Person Colby Cheney

Person Colby Cheney (born February 25, 1828 in Holderness , Grafton County , New Hampshire , † June 19, 1901 in Dover , New Hampshire) was an American politician and from 1875 to 1877 Governor of New Hampshire. Between 1886 and 1887 he represented this state in the US Senate .

Early years and political advancement

Person Cheney was born as one of eleven children of paper manufacturer Moses Cheney. In 1835 the family moved to Peterborough . The young person then attended schools in Peterborough, Hancock and Parsonsfield ( Maine ). In 1845 he took over the management of his father's paper mill and in 1853, following a merger, he became a partner in Cheney, Hadley & Going .

Between 1853 and 1855 he was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives and became a member of the new Republican Party . During the Civil War he was a first lieutenant and quartermaster with an infantry unit from New Hampshire. In August 1863 he had to give up military service for health reasons. Between 1864 and 1867 he was Railroad Commissioner of the government of New Hampshire. In 1867 he moved to Manchester , where he continued to work in the paper business. Between 1871 and 1873 he was Mayor of Manchester. In 1875 he was elected governor of his state. The election result was so close, however, that the state legislature had to make the final decision in Cheney's favor.

New Hampshire Governor

Cheney took office on June 10, 1875. After re-election in 1876, he could remain in this office until June 6, 1877. During this time, many offices that had gone to members of his Democratic Party under his predecessor James A. Weston were given back to Republicans. Governor Cheney reformed the administration to save money while trying to make the offices more efficient. Despite the bad economic situation at the time, he worked on reducing the national debt. A law banning religious minorities from public office has been repealed.

US Senator and Ambassador

Cheney spent the nine years after the end of his governorship in Manchester, where he continued to pursue his business interests. After the death of US Senator Austin F. Pike on October 8, 1886, then Governor Moody Currier Cheney appointed Pike's interim successor as Class 2 Senator . He exercised this mandate between November 24, 1886 and June 14, 1887. On that day, William E. Chandler, officially elected Senator, succeeded him in the US Congress . In 1888, Cheney was a delegate to the Republican National Convention , where Benjamin Harrison was nominated for president. The latter then appointed him as president as the American envoy to Switzerland , an office that Cheney exercised between 1892 and 1893.

Another résumé

Cheney was a member of the Republican National Committee until 1900 . He died in June 1901 and was buried in Manchester. Person Cheney was married twice and had one child.
