Leonard Wilcox
Leonard Wilcox (born January 29, 1799 in Hanover , New Hampshire , † June 18, 1850 in Orford , New Hampshire) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of New Hampshire in the US Senate .
Leonard Wilcox, whose father Jeduthun Wilcox sat for New Hampshire in the United States House of Representatives from 1813 to 1816 , graduated from Dartmouth College in his hometown of Hanover in 1817 . He subsequently studied law , was inducted into the bar in 1820 and began practicing in Orford, Grafton County . From 1828 to 1834 Wilcox held his first political mandate as a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives . Between 1838 and 1840 he was a judge in the Superior Court of New Hampshire; he also served from 1838 to 1842 as the state's bank commissioner .
When the future US President Franklin Pierce resigned his mandate in the United States Senate on February 28, 1842, Leonard Wilcox was appointed by Governor John Page as his successor. He remained after his confirmation in the following by-election from March 1, 1842 to March 3, 1843 in Washington , he did not run for re-election. He then worked again as a lawyer. From 1847 to 1848 he was a judge on the Court of Common Pleas of New Hampshire before returning to the Superior Court , where he served as judge until his death in 1850.
