Benning W. Jenness
Benning Wentworth Jenness (born July 14, 1806 in Deerfield , Rockingham County , New Hampshire , † November 16, 1879 in Cleveland , Ohio ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of New Hampshire in the US Senate .
After attending Bradford Academy , a private school in Massachusetts , Benning Jenness embarked on a commercial career. From 1826 to 1856 he worked in Strafford . In parallel, he held a number of offices at the local level; he was also a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives for some time .
From 1841 to 1845 Jenness served as a probate judge in Strafford County . On December 1, 1845, he was appointed acting successor to Senator Levi Woodbury , who had followed an appeal to the Supreme Court . He held office until June 13, 1846, when he handed the mandate over to Joseph Cilley , who was elected as his official successor . Jenness tried to be elected to the US House of Representatives in the same year , but failed.
After that he was only sporadically active in politics. In 1850 he took part in the New Hampshire Constitutional Convention; in 1861 he was proposed as governor of the state but declined the nomination. Jenness then moved to Ohio, where he worked in the timber trade and banking.
