Austin F. Pike

Austin Franklin Pike (born October 16, 1819 in Hebron , New Hampshire , † October 8, 1886 in Franklin , New Hampshire) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He represented the state of New Hampshire in both houses of the US Congress .

Career

After receiving a degree , Austin Pike studied law and was inducted into the Merrimack County Bar in 1845 .

He first became politically active in 1850 when he was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives, to which he belonged until 1852. From 1857 to 1858 he sat in the New Hampshire Senate and served as its President. He returned to the State House of Representatives from 1865 to 1866 as its speaker , succeeding William E. Chandler .

On March 4, 1873, he took his seat as MP for New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives . There he remained after a failed re-election until March 3, 1875. Pike returned to Congress in Washington on March 4, 1883 as a US Senator after he had prevailed against the also Republican incumbent Edward H. Rollins . He was chairman of the Senate Committee on Claims , but died in October 1886 in Franklin, where he was buried.
