Samuel Smith (politician, 1765)

Samuel Smith (born November 11, 1765 in Peterborough , Hillsborough County , New Hampshire Colony , † April 25, 1842 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1813 and 1815 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Samuel Smith was the younger brother of Jeremiah Smith (1759-1842), who sat between 1791 and 1797 for New Hampshire in Congress and between 1809 and 1810 was governor of that state. Smith was also the uncle of Robert Smith (1802-1867), who represented Illinois twice in Congress between 1843 and 1849 . Samuel Smith attended Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter . After that he became active in the trade. Between 1794 and 1811 he served as a discussion leader at various political meetings.

Smith was a member of the Federalist Party . In the 1812 congressional elections, which were held nationwide, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC for the second mandate of New Hampshire . There he took over on March 4, 1813, succeeding Samuel Dinsmoor of the Democratic Republican Party . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1814, Smith could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1815. This time was determined by the events of the British-American War .

After serving in Congress, Smith returned to trading. Since 1828 he also dealt with the manufacture of paper and cotton products. He died on April 25, 1842 in his birthplace, Peterborough.
