Samuel Newell Bell

Samuel Newell Bell (born March 25, 1829 in Chester , Rockingham County , New Hampshire , † February 8, 1889 in North Woodstock , New Hampshire) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives . He was the grandson of Samuel Bell and nephew of James Bell .

Bell attended school in Francestown and Phillips Academy in Andover , Massachusetts . He graduated from Dartmouth College , Hanover in 1847 , then studied law and was then admitted to the bar in 1849. He then practiced in Meredith , New Hampshire.

Later he decided to embark on a political career by running for a seat in the 42nd US Congress , where he worked after a successful election from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873. In 1872 he ran unsuccessfully for the 43rd US Congress . However, he was elected to the 44th US Congress , where he remained from March 4, 1875 to March 3, 1877. He decided not to run for re-election in 1876.

After serving in the House of Representatives, Bell returned to his law practice in Meredith. He also dealt with real estate business. He was also president of several railroad companies and vice president of the New Hampshire Fire Insurance Co. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Superior Court of New Hampshire , but he turned down this office. He then retired from public life and died on February 8, 1889 while visiting North Woodstock. He was then buried in Valley Cemetery in Manchester .
