Siegmund Rotstein (born November 30, 1925 in Chemnitz ; † August 6, 2020 ) was chairman of the Jewish community in Chemnitz from 1966 to 2006.

Life

After the Nazis came to power , Rotstein was deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp as a child . After liberation from the concentration camp, he returned to his hometown as one of the few surviving Jews from Chemnitz.

Rotstein first completed an apprenticeship as a men's tailor before working in wholesale and retail.

In addition to his job, he devoted himself to Jewish community life in his hometown. From 1959 Rotstein was a member of the community board and the advisory board of the Association of Jewish Communities in the GDR. Until 1990 he was editor of the news paper of the Association of the Jewish Congregation of Berlin and the Association of Jewish Congregations in the GDR . From 1966 to 2006 he was chairman, since 2007 honorary chairman of the Jewish community in Karl-Marx-Stadt / Chemnitz.

He was involved in the integration of 500 resettled community members in Chemnitz. From 1990 to 2001, as chairman of the Saxony State Association of Jewish Communities, he devoted himself to solving these integration issues in Leipzig and Dresden.

Siegmund Rotstein got involved in building a new synagogue in Chemnitz. The new synagogue in Chemnitz has been the center of Jewish life in the city since 2002 .

Rotstein had been an honorary citizen of the city of Chemnitz since May 16, 2007 .
