The area was assigned to a group of settlers under the leadership of the teacher Samuel Palmer in 1748 . They had already laid out more land around the lake, which is why Meredith was initially known as Palmerstown or Second Township and later as New Salem , as many settlers came from Salem , Massachusetts . In 1768 the place was officially founded by Governor John Wentworth . The name was chosen in honor of William Meredith , who campaigned against taxation in the colonies.
