John Wentworth, 1769

Sir John Wentworth, 1st Baronet (born August 9, 1737 in Portsmouth , New Hampshire , † April 8, 1820 in Halifax , Nova Scotia ) was British colonial governor of New Hampshire and Nova Scotia.

Career

John Wentworth graduated in 1755 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and in 1758 with a Master of Arts at Harvard College . He succeeded his uncle, Benning Wentworth , as Governor of New Hampshire in 1767 . During his tenure he was actively involved in the founding of Dartmouth College . Although he was generally sympathetic to the colonists, he remained loyal to the crown, so that he finally had to leave New Hampshire in 1775. After the American War of Independence , he was Governor of Nova Scotia from 1792 to 1808. During this time he was made hereditary baronet , of Parlut in the County of Lincoln on May 16, 1795 .

From his marriage to his cousin Frances Deering Wentworth, widow of Theodore Atkinson, he had a son, Charles Mary Wentworth (1775-1844), who inherited him in 1820 as 2nd Baronet.
