Matthew Henry Richey
Matthew Henry Richey , QC (born June 10, 1828 in Windsor , Nova Scotia , † February 21, 1911 ) was a Canadian politician . He has served twice as Mayor of Halifax City , MP in the House of Commons, and Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Province.
biography
Richey was the son of a Methodist preacher immigrated from Northern Ireland . He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1850, after which he opened a law firm in Halifax. In 1858 he was elected to Halifax City Council, which he served for five years. He was elected mayor in 1864, and he held this office until 1867. His second term as mayor lasted from 1875 to 1878.
Richey ran as a candidate for the Liberal Conservative Party in the general election in 1878 and then represented the Halifax constituency. In 1882 he was re-elected. He gave up his parliamentary mandate when Governor General Lord Lorne sworn in 1883 as Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Nova Scotia. He held this representative office for five years.
