Mayann Francis

Mayann Elizabeth Francis , ONS (born February 18, 1946 in Sydney , Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian human rights activist . from 2006 to 2012 she was the lieutenant governor of the province of Nova Scotia and as such represented the head of state, Queen Elizabeth II , at the provincial level.

biography

The daughter of an archpriest of the African Orthodox Church , a religious community close to the Anglicans , initially worked as a radiology assistant and legal assistant. At the same time she studied at Saint Mary's University in Halifax and at New York University . In 1984 she graduated with a Master of Public Administration . Francis then held senior positions at various agencies including the Brooklyn District Attorney , Dalhousie University in Halifax and the Ontario Provincial Government . She has also served on the boards of several charities, including the National Institute for the Blind.

From 1999 to 2006, Francis was the director and executive director of the Human Rights Commission of the Province of Nova Scotia, and from 2000 to 2003 she was the Provincial Ombudsman . On the proposal of Prime Minister Stephen Harper , Governor General Michaëlle Jean appointed her lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia on June 20, 2006. Francis was the first Afro-Canadian and the second woman to hold the post since September 7, 2006.
