Saint Mary's University (SMU) is a university in Halifax , Nova Scotia , Canada .

history

Forerunner was a school founded in 1802 by the Roman Catholic priest Edmund Burke. In 1840 it was founded by the Archdiocese of Halifax . In 1841 it was recognized by the provincial government of Nova Scotia, and in 1852 by the Canadian state. In 1913 the college was placed under the direction of the Christian Brothers ; The Jesuits followed in 1940 . In 1970 the university became a state institution.
