The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is an Oshawa- based university that shares its campus with Durham College. It was founded in 2002 and began taking its first students in 2003, making it one of the youngest universities in Canada. All undergraduate students need a Thinkpad laptop, which they can borrow from the university, as a prerequisite for enrollment. Thus, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology is Ontario's only laptop-based university. The faculty also encourages students to use their laptops to complete assignments, conduct laboratory tests, and interact with faculty during lectures. The university also offers a number of scholarship programs in the fields of computer science, engineering, health, and information technology. The campus is approximately 400 hectares (1.6 km²) and is located in the northern part of Oshawa.
