The Vancouver Iceland University (abbreviation VIU ) is a public University in Nanaimo , British Columbia , Canada , with additional locations in Powell River , Duncan and Parksville - Qualicum Beach .

The college was founded in 1969 as Malaspina College, named after Alessandro Malaspina di Mulazzo , and renamed Malaspina University College in 1988 . In 2008 it was recognized as a University of Vancouver Island University . The university trains around 16,000 students in over 120 study programs.
