Parksville is a small town in the western Canadian province of British Columbia . It is located at the intersection of Highways 4A and 19A on Vancouver Island , in the Regional District of Nanaimo .

geography

Parksville is located approximately 7 kilometers southeast of Qualicum Beach and approximately 37 kilometers northwest of Nanaimo . Located on Parksville Bay, directly on the west coast of Vancouver Island, the city is right on the Strait of Georgia .

history

The history of the settlement goes back further than just the general view of Europeans, since before Europeans settled the area was already a settlement and hunting area of ​​the First Nation .

It was first mentioned in maps by the Spaniards in 1791. It describes the area between the Englishman River (Spanish name "Rio de Grullas") and the French Creek (Spanish name "Punta de Leonardo"). The English first mentioned it in 1873 with the farm of a certain John Hirst. A post office was set up here in 1877. In 1901 the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway reached the place and ensured further growth. Tourism in Parksville began with the railroad. So far the place has lived mainly from forestry and agriculture.

The recognition of the local self-government (incorporated) for the community (Village) took place on June 19, 1945. The recognition as a city (Town) took place on March 30, 1978, and as a city (City) on May 1, 1986.

Demographics

The census in 2011 showed a population of 11,977 people for the small town. 27,822 people live in the metropolitan region.

Trivia

A sand sculpture competition has been held in the city every year since 1982 as part of the “Beachfest”. This is a qualifying competition for the "World Championship of Sand Sculpting".
