Powell River is a small town on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia , Canada .

It is located on the coast of the Strait of Georgia . Apart from a few smaller villages, it is the only town in the qathet Regional District . To the west, the Powell River is bounded by the Strait of Georgia. The Coast Mountains lie to the east and fjords border the landscape to the north and south. In the north of the city the river of the same name , which flows through the nearby fjord lake Powell Lake, flows into the sea.

These unique geographic conditions have earned Powell River a reputation as a remote community despite being near major cities on the British Columbia coast, such as Vancouver . The small town is on the route of Highway 101 . However, the city can only be reached by plane or ferry ( Saltery Bay Ferry Terminal ).

The place was named after Israel Wood Powell .

In 1912, the first paper production in British Columbia started here. The associated historic industrial city with around 400 buildings was declared on July 6, 1995, under the name Powell River Townsite Historic District , by the Canadian government to the National Historic Site of Canada . During this founding and development phase, the Tla'amin people paid little attention to the First Nation originally living here .
