The Royal Roads University is a university based in the Canadian city of Colwood , British Columbia . It offers training courses in various subjects that extend up to bachelor's and master's degrees . The university is based in Hatley Castle, which is part of the Hatley Park National Historic Site and one of the National Historic Site of Canada in British Columbia . Due to the history of its origins, the university has close ties to the Canadian Navy .

The Royal Roads University emerged in 1995 from what was then the Royal Roads Military College . The Royal Roads Military College was founded in 1940 and was an educational institution of the Canadian Armed Forces , with a focus on training for naval officers.
