history

Colwood was originally one of four large farms established by the Hudson's Bay Company in the 1850s to support the ever-increasing population of their Fort Victoria trading post .

Edward E Langford arrived at the colony in 1851 . He had been appointed farm administrator by a subsidiary of the Hudson's Bay Company, the Puget Sound Agricultural Company . His family had a country estate in Sussex, England called Colwood. Hence he named the farm that way. His wife later gave birth to the first white male child in the colony.

In 1860, the Fisgard Lighthouse was completed on a headland . This was followed in 1863 by a sawmill near the farm. The first schoolhouse was built in 1874 and a post office was opened in Colwood in 1881. From 1890, Fort Rodd Hill was built to protect the nearby port of Esquimalt .

In 1906, then was James Dunsmuir , BC's Lieutenant Governor resident Hatley Castle building.

In the urban area of Colwood there are therefore several buildings that are important for Canadian history, which are now part of the National Historic Site of Canada . These are Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site and Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site and Hatley Park National Historic Site .
