View Royal is a small town on the southern end of Vancouver Island in British Columbia , Canada . The small town is part of the Greater Victoria metropolitan area , in the Capital Regional District , which includes several locations.

The small town is about 7 kilometers west of Victoria and is immediately surrounded by the parishes of Colwood , Langford , Highlands , Saanich and Esquimalt .

View Royal itself consists of several districts (neighborhoods):

With its southwestern areas, the small town meets a bay on Juan de Fuca Street .

history

As everywhere in Canada, the story goes far beyond documented European settlement. Before Europeans settled here, the area was a settlement and hunting area for the First Nations , the Esquimalt tribe .

Craigflower Schoolhouse

European settlement only really picked up speed around 1850, although Europeans had already settled here before that. During this time, two building complexes were built, which were declared a national monument on October 27, 1964. Today's National Historic Site of Canada , Craigflower Manor House and Craigflower Schoolhouse are being built in the area where the community is today . The two also mark the transition from the fur trade that had prevailed until then to agricultural settlement.

Demographics

The census in 2011 showed a population of 9381 inhabitants for the city. The city's population has increased by 7.0% compared to the 2006 census, which is exactly the average for the entire province of British Columbia, where the population also grew by 7.0% at the same time.

politics

The granting of local self-government for the municipality took place on October 15, 1988 ( incorporated as Town Municipality ).

The mayor of the parish is Graham Hill. Together with four other citizens, he forms the council of the municipality (council).

economy

Since the small town is more or less completely surrounded by other communities, trade and handicrafts are the predominant branches of the economy. Many employees live in the small town, but work in the surrounding communities.

The median income of the residents of View Royal in 2006 was well above average C $ 33,617, while in the province of British Columbia it was only C $ 24,867.

traffic

Two highways run through View Royal. On the one hand, the Trans-Canada Highway ( Highway 1 ) runs through the community and, on the other hand, the original course of the Trans-Canada Highway in the form of Highway 1A View Royal runs through .

The city does not have its own airport, but can only be reached via the airports of the surrounding communities, especially that of Victoria.

Trivia

View Royal is the oldest continuously operating pub in British Columbia. The Six Mile Pub opened in 1855.
