The Ontario College of Art & Design (abbreviated: OCAD) is Canada's largest and oldest university for art and design. The university is located in Toronto on McCaul Street, southeast of the Art Gallery of Ontario . In addition to the classic courses leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Design degrees , the OCAD also offers interdisciplinary courses that incorporate the new media.
The Ontario School of Art was founded in 1876 and was renamed the Ontario College of Art in 1931 . It has had its current name since 1996. The OCAD has a number of famous graduates such as the actor and director Michael Ironside . In 1969/70, Roy Ascott made radical changes to the course and content of the course.
In 2004 the institute was expanded by the Sharp Center for Design , which was designed by the architect Will Alsop in collaboration with the Robbie / Young + Wright Architects Inc. office. The 42.5 million expensive extension is characterized by a white cuboid on a 26 meter high stilt construction. The cuboid houses exhibition rooms, lecture halls and administrative rooms of the design center on two floors. In addition to the square windows, black squares of different sizes create the impression that the structure is perforated.
