Roderick George Robbie , OC , LL.D., FRAIC, (born September 15, 1928 in Poole , England , † January 4, 2012 in Toronto ) was a Canadian architect . He was known for designing the Canadian pavilion at Expo 67 and the multifunctional sports arena Rogers Center in Toronto.

Life

Robbie, who was born in Poole, England to William George and Gladys May Robbie, began his professional career in 1951 with British Rail . He did his military service in Egypt and the United Kingdom in the construction manager's regiment from 1947 to 1949. In 1956 he moved to Canada, where he worked for various architectural firms. As a partner of Ashworth, Robbie, Vaughan and Williams Architects and Planners , he designed the Canadian Katimavik pavilion for the world exhibition Expo 67 in Montreal in 1967 . His design for the multifunctional sports arena SkyDome (today: Rogers Center ), which was the first stadium with a completely retractable roof, received worldwide attention .

Robbie was politically active and for many years was involved in various parties and the anti-nuclear power movement . He was married to Enid Robbie, who died in 2001, and had four children with her.
